Shin-Etsu Handotai Europe Ltd is the world’s leading manufacturer of high quality silicon wafers for use in semiconductors. It’s manufacturing facility in Livingston, West Lothian is a significant employer in the area and is now looking to recruit apprentices for its Equipment Maintenance Department responsible for planned & unplanned and maintenance of its wafer manufacturing equipment.
Job overview: The apprentice will study for 4 years whilst learning practically on the job here at Shin-Etsu. The successful individual will work closely alongside the electrical and mechanical equipment maintenance teams in order to improve the reliability of the wafer processing equipment. The purpose of this opportunity is to build a succession plan for Shin-Etsu with the ultimate aim of a position at the end of the placement.
What will I learn?
Learn how to safely maintain and repair a wide range of electrical/mechanical equipment to a high standard in an industrial environment. Skills you will develop include electrical & mechanical applications and solutions, electrical wiring, pneumatic systems, PLC motor controls, robotics, testing and installation. You will attend Edinburgh College (Midlothian) and therefore will need to have your own transport or use of public transport when commuting to work or college when term starts. Shin-Etsu work closely with EDETA as the nominated service provider for the Company throughout the apprenticeship programme. Complete the required work associated with module assessments in a timely manner, raising issues early when not meeting required deadlines.
The successful applicant will be required to train as an Electrical Maintenance apprentice, attaining the appropriate knowledge, skills and experience to become a fully qualified and competent equipment maintenance technician. The apprenticeship scheme is run in conjunction with a training provider and Edinburgh College Midlothian Campus to ensure the applicant is supported through a high quality-training programme. Training normally takes a period of 4 years. During the programme, the post holder will work towards achieving an SVQ 3 in Electrical/Mechanical Maintenance and an NC/HNC (SCQF Level 7) in Electrical. Year 1 – Full-time attendance at college 4 days- 1day at Shin-Etsu SVQ PEO Level 2 and NC Year 2 – Day Release at college HNC/Shin-Etsu SVQ Level 3 Year 3 Day Release at college HNC/Shin-Etsu SVQ Level 3 Year 4 remainder of time workplace based completing SVQ Level 3 time spent on-the-job learning, developing knowledge and skills.
What qualification or qualities are required?
You’ll have a head start in this vacancy if you’ve completed a Foundation Apprenticeship in a related field. We’ll need you to provide evidence of your qualification and show you gained the relevant skills from your placement
Candidates should be enthusiastic team members with a natural interest and aptitude for electrical/mechanical engineering. Hold a minimum of 2 Highers in Maths and English plus 3 National 5’s (or Equivalent ie GCSE's ) at level C or above such as Product Design, Science or Tech Studies. Excellent communication skills with the ability to use your own initiative and a strong drive to succeed are all essential.
