Social Enterprise Schools is a fully funded programme that supports interdisciplinary learning.
Young people (aged 5-18) are asked about what they care about and then they are encouraged and supported to come up with an enterprising solution. Inspirational pupil workshops are led by facilitators who are all experienced social entrepreneurs. Last year, the young people at Linlithgow Academy were asked what they care about. Their reply was “male suicide”. The pupils then started thinking about how they could develop a social enterprise around this social cause and produced “Chat n’ chill”. Their enterprise is that they will sell ice cream at lunchtime in a bid to encourage people to come together. Any profits from their enterprise will be given to a local charity that supports people with poor mental health. Aimed at improving employability prospects for the future workforce, this programme is free of charge and designed to support teachers with careers education.
The ICE CityZen competition is an easy to run, structured activity which is supported throughout by an ICE STEM Ambassador.
It takes place yearly in the autumn term and makes an ideal extra-curricular activity for students making critical decisions about their futures. It's a great opportunity for any pupils who may be thinking about applying for an engineering or built environment course or apprenticeship. The pupils work in teams of up to four, on a series of challenges to build the civil engineering infrastructure in a virtual city and are supported throughout by an ICE STEM Ambassador. New for this year is ICE's partnership with Loud Speaker. They’re offering a presentation skills webinar for the teams taking part and an in-person workshop prize for the winning school, so pupils can improve their communication skills as well as learning about the built environment and making industry contacts. The UK wide challenge was won last year by a Scottish team and the teacher involved has written a blog to explain her experience of the competition.
